What is NGERS?

The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act is one of the key regulatory mechanisms to prepare for the introduction of the CPRS (Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme) which is essentially is an Emission Audit (covering total emissions such as transport, supply chain, waste, refrigerant with charge >100kg & GWP >1000, etc) where liable parties are:

  • Corporate groups that emit > 125 kt CO2-e (with lower thresholds in 2009/11)
  • Facilities that emit >25 kt CO2-e

Independent assessments require an external auditor and Corporations have until 31 October 2009 to submit their first report with significant penalties for incorrect or late submissions. Corporations that may meet or exceed thresholds should be collecting greenhouse gas emissions and energy data. Corporations likely to meet thresholds next financial year should be considering setting up GHG and energy accounting and reporting systems.
